The current economic conditions (particularly the near stand-still in new construction) have accelerated the rate at which Potlatch has been letting go of properties in order to trim overhead and supplement the bottom line. Several years ago it was the decision to switch from trains to trucks for delivery of logs to its wood and paper products mill at Lewiston. More recently, the paper side of Lewiston was spun off to a new (lower-cost) operator. And for the past couple of years, vast tracts of their timber land have quietly been going up for sale. If it can get so much as a tax deduction or flat-out cash from the state of Idaho for it, Potlatch will probably cast off the branch south of St. Maries for a bike trail.
