I don't know for sure, but my guess is that they do not use a caboose any more. The reason I say this is because I have seen pictures recently on another website of the Permanente Local using six axle (!!!!) locomotives, but no cabooses were in the photo.
As a little kid, I used to hop on my bike when I heard the horn as it came through Quito Road, and by then I would pedal up to the crossing by the Little League ballpark on Glen Brae Drive (Saratoga, CA) to watch the train. The Conductor was always in the caboose kicking back, reading the afternoon edition of the San Jose Mercury News, and always waved to me. I miss those days sometimes.....
