I played a key role in preserving the last of the SP H12-44s.
I forget its SP number now (1579 maybe?), but there was one being used to switch the Southwest Portland Cement Co. plant west of Odessa, TX. I had dropped by occasionally to photograph it in the late 1980s and early 90s.
When I got some interest from a TX museum to save it, I wrote the plant manager to see if we could work out a deal. It turned out the timing was right. The plant was planning to sell it or scrap it. A group of us went out there, took a test drive, and negotiated a deal.
I seem to recall there was one other museum that had tried to acquire it as well.
