The ICC report was about two short trains powered by SP Baldwin AS616's heading railroad east out of Albany toward Corvallis on the Toledo Line. A 8 car empty log train stopped at the end of the Willamette River Trestle and a 23 car local freight came along 5 minutes later and rear ended the first train. The collision shoved a log car clean through the caboose killing the swing brakeman and injuring the conductor and flagman.
