Mike, Espee # 9800 ( ex # 9150 / exx # 9118 ), is an Alco C - 643( also called a DH - 643 ). This unit & 2 sisters were the last in a series of Diesel - Hydraulic locomotives built @ Espee request, & used a 12 cylinder / 2150 HP 251 series hooked to a Voith hydraulic transmission & driveshafts, to power each 3 axle truck. These " Alco - hoylics " were almost all American - made( except the German transmissions ), and Espee hoped they would be more reliable than the 1st generation units from Krauss - Maffei of Germany, which used Maybach diesels. Typical of late - model Alcos, they were powerful but unreliable, & spent more time stored than running. All 3 were scrapped.
