What I meant was that the train won't slam over the kids, leaving them nothing but a bloody pulp caught in the traction motors--they'll either be slowly mangled (and probably left living and horribly disfigured--maybe a fitting fate, but definitely not a nice clean one that any engineer would want, no matter how bad the kid) or just brushed aside by the plow.
Regarding the engineer's and conductor's actions: we can only speculate about why they came out of the cab. With a freight locomotive (with external walkways), they could have climbed up on the engine and broken into the cab (unless the engineer was REALLY quick with his key, if he even has it on him), but with a passenger engine with no walkways (like an F59PHI), the could have climbed up the side ladders but not really been able to open the door (if the engineer's holding it shut). If it was running with the cab car first, likewise, I don't think it would have been that easy to break in to, so I'm not sure why they got down. As I said, the lesson for train crews is: don't try to handle it on your own--call the police.
Regarding self-defense: Mark said it best in his post just before this one.
