I remember back in the 90's a real "Rocket Scientist" bought a house abutting the UP branch to Henderson, NV outside of Las Vegas. After living there for about 6 months, UP changed the schedule of the Henderson local that serves the Timet industrial complex from day time to night, and he heared the trains for the first time. This is a true story -- it was a half page article in the LV Review-Journal at the time. The man was horrified to find out that they actually ran trains on the tracks, and wanted something done about it. I couldn't believe it, a rocket scientist buys a house next to the tracks and complains about the trains! As the old saying goes, live in a swamp, expect frogs. No wonder space shuttles blow up.
Well, the article sturred up a lot of commotion, and before you know it, some moms with curlers in their hair started looking at all the hazmat going by and totally freaked out. Letters poured in about the track being unsafe, and how can they let chlorine and nitric acid go by our houses. It was a laughable nighmare, but eventually it all died out. I recall that UP changed the schedule back to daylight hours, and then all the potential wrecks, explosions, gas leaks, fireballs, and all that died with all that Nevada sunlight.
