I'd be very curious to know where those cars are going. The mile and a half long string that sat in Coeur d'Alene for most of 2009 got pulled off the CdA branch before Christmas. To the best of my knowledge, new construction and lumber production have not ramped up enough to need that many cars. In the case of the CdA branch, however, the reason is indeed related to the pending removal of track. Final abandonment process has been quietly under way between BNSF, the feds, the city, etc.
