Almanor Railroad Files for Abandonment

It appears that the scrap crews reported here as tearing up the Almanor within the last week or so may have jumped the gun a little bit...the Almanor Railroad today filed their Notice of Exemption seeking authority to abandon their railroad line. The notice seeks to make the exemption effective around March 10th. The exemption can be found in today's Filings section on the STB website (http://www.stb.dot.gov).

According to some of the information contained in the exemption there is at least some interest in preserving the grade as a recreational trail, and the railroad is proposing to keep the one historic structure on the line (the bridge across the top of Lake Almanor) intact so that a trail is possible.
