Another really fine image Drew thanks...the 46 had an SP 6 chime whistle for most or all of her career on the CWR. I remember standing right about where you were watching a regular passnger train ready to depart with her in 1972 when the engineer tried his injector. It didn't deliver right away and the flow out the overflow pipe to the ground was so strong that it tore a small chunk of asphalt loose from the pavement! On paper, she was almost 1 1/2 times as powerful (t.e.) as number 45, but with the loss of her watertanks, she lost of significant amount of adhesion and did not perform nearly as well as she should have. A real shame given the rebuild that she received in the shops at Fort Bragg. Did get to run her for a few miles once out of Ranch on the eastbound trip and it was a nice experience.
One of the other posters was right, the 70's were pretty interesting here in the Golden State.
