This day in Railroad History
February 4, 1887
The Interstate Commerce Act was signed into law by President Grover Cleveland. Responding to a widespread public outcry, states had passed laws that were designed to curb railroad abuses. However, in an 1886 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state laws regulating interstate railroads were unconstitutional because they violated the Commerce Clause, which gives Congress the exclusive power "to regulate Commerce with foreign nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes" left a regulatory void that was soon filled by Congress. The following year, Congress passed the Interstate Commerce Act.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western's legendary Rio Grande Zephyr makes the passenger stop at Glenwood Springs, CO on a Denver to Salt Lake City run in October 1979. On the lead is F9A No. 5771, which is coupled ahead of two F9 B-units and a steam generator car built from an Alco PB1. The D&RGW elected to not join Amtrak when it was created in 1971, and therefore was required to provide passenger service between these two cities. This service ran until April 24, 1983 when it was discontinued. Amtrak now provides service over the former D&RGW with its Chicago-Emeryville, CA California Zephyr.

A major winter storm passed through the mid-Atlantic region on December 19, 2009, dumping almost two feet of snow, closing airports, creating dangerous conditions on roadways, and causing disruptions on CSX. Many businesses and schools were closed following the storm, and the federal government in the Washington DC area was closed on Monday December 21st. On CSX's Metropolitan Sub three trains were stranded between Brunswick, MD and Washington DC due to frozen switches and outlawed crews. Trains began moving again on the Metropolitan Sub late in the afternoon the day following the storm. The first train in over 15 hours to run over the Metropolitan Sub was the east bound Capitol Limited, seen in this photo passing the historic former B&O depot at Point of Rocks, MD.
