You are right on, Charley, there is no way the railroad infrastructure is worn out ... just navy speak for "we're just plain tired of the railroad". Remarkably, the base had about 55 miles of railroad crammed onto that station ... serving just about every corner of the facility.

Thanks for the additional info NWSSB Engineer, although I left in Nov of 94, I got to return as the engineer of that GP-9 during the sand train contract and also for some "dirty dirt" removal a little later.

The two "good" locos came from Chrome (359 was "mine"), we also fielded two other 80 tonners that were not so good, don't remember who rebuilt them. For a time, we also had a former Baldwin VO 1000 that was reengined (by Republic), called it the "railbreaker" as it was not friendly to the light rail. It eventually went to Concord and is in private hands now (I understand).
