This day in Railroad History
February 9, 1901
Frederick Henry Harvey died today. Fred Harvey developed the well known Harvey House chain of lunch rooms, restaurants, souvenir shops, hotels, and dining cars which served rail passengers on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and several smaller railroads. Harvey Houses were known for good food and innovative marketing. When Fred Harvey died, his last words to his sons were reportedly "Don't cut the ham too thin, boys." His sons continued to operate the company. In 1968, the Hawaii-based Amfac Corporation bought the Harvey Company. A new Amfac division, the Fred Harvey Trading Company was set up as the retail division of Amfac Parks & Resorts. In 2002, Amfac changed their name to Xanterra Parks & Resorts®, and ironically, is now the operator of the Grand Canyon Railway, formerly owned by the Santa Fe Railroad.
