You're right: they were taller than your average SD90/C45ACCTE. A DD40X with brand new Fat Forty D77X Combos stood about 17' 3" from the head of the rail to the top of the horns (mounted between the #1 & #2 cooling fans on the #1 engine).

On a related note, the #6936 was 'dehorned' on its first trip through the new washhouse/service track at Hinkle. The brackets on which the pressure jets were mounted had a maximum clearance of just under 17'. Lucky for us, it was laying over at Hinkle for 24 hours, which was plenty of time for us to drill out the broken bolts and apply a new horn.
