The tracks east from Umatilla were the mainline at one time. The track from Portland ran east past Boardman to a point called Messner then basically followed the highway past Irrigon, Umatilla and along the Columbia to Wallula.

Umatilla was a major junction where the main line went east towards Hermiston, Hinkle (which didn't exist yet)and on to Pendelton. The line between Hinkle and Messner was built later and was known as the Coyote Cut Off. When the McNary dam was being planned the line from Messner to Irrigon was abandoned, the current Washy line from Hinkle to Wallula was built/relocated and the main line from Hinkle to Umatilla and Irrigon became a dead end branch.
