Tom has an excellent idea and point, but, I can tell you right now, without even asking them, Amtrak isn't interested. Amtrak lost complete interest and ideas for new routes and services after the last and best Amtrak President, W. G. Claytor Jr., retired in 1994 and died of cancer shortly there after. There were several routes/additions/extentsions under his leadership, but you have to remember also, W.G.C. was the last Amtrak President who was a true 100% railroader, having spent his entire life in Railroad Operations. No Amtrak President ever since can say they did railroading continously like Mr. Claytor Jr. did. My observation of Amtrak is, unless they can figure out how to have someone else pay for it, then they don't want to do it, it is too hard and difficult for them at this point. Yes, lack of money is a major factor in their decision not to do something, but come on, there are ways to figure out how to pull something off, and Mr. Claytor Jr. proved this, time and time again. I sure miss him very much.
