Three miscellaneous comments
1. NASA has a problem in that its theme mission - manned spaceflight to Mars - looks to be much more difficult than previously thought. The radiation issue is proving to be killer such that the protective technology will have to play catchup - if such technology is even feasible. Mars is definitely the target but figure decades away under the best of circumstances.
2. HSR in places like Ohio is putting the cart before the horse. No urban rail transit at all in Akron, Columbus, Cincinnati, etc. as yet. It makes much more sense to me to start with the cities and suburbs first.
3. The passenger rail renaissance in California is being sapped by crappy planning and gerrymandering. Two glaring examples of depressing dumb-downs: the CHSRA's Tehachapis detour and SF Muni's Central Subway mutant. Hard to believe that the latter doesn't even feature a direct station connection to Muni and BART lines on Market Street, which would have been possible if they crossed Market, 3rd and Kearny Streets at the mezzanine level.
