This day in Railroad History
February 26, 1906
The new "track water pans" of the Michigan Central Railroad (owned by NYC, now NS) near Ypsilanti, Michigan were used the first time today, "whereby engines may take water while running at the rate of thirty-five miles an hour." The water is kept from freezing by hot water pipes running beneath the track. The water was heated at an engine house near the track pan manned by two engineers, who also operated a pumper that refilled either track pan after a train had passed. Typically track pans were in rural areas with small towns where important trains did not stop. This led to the origination of the term "jerk-water town."

CSX train Q394 splits a pair of signals as it drifts downgrade on the Keystone Sub at Corriganville, MD five miles west of Cumberland on February 12, 2010. On the lead is CSX SD40-2 No. 8421, which was originally Western Maryland Railway SD40 No. 7570, built by EMD in August 1966. The 7570 was delivered in the WM's attractive black and gold scheme, and was one of five SD40s purchased by the Western Maryland that year. During a diesel rebuild program in the 1990s CSX rebuilt the 8421 into an SD40-2, which was one of many SD40s on its roster to undergo upgrading. In this era of seeing a steady stream of modern wide-nose diesels it is a real treat to see 40+ year old conventional-nose engines still at work.
