This day in Railroad History
February 27, 1965
Today is the last day of operations for the steam powered Buffalo Creek and Gauley RR, owned by the Elk River Coal and Lumber Co in West Virginia. For much of its history, the BC&G has hauled both coal and lumber out to the B&O at Dundon, WV. When the mine closed, the BC&G continued to haul finished lumber for W.M. RItter Lumber. The BC&G was all steam, although W.M. Ritter brought a Plymouth diesel, #20, in for logging service in the late 1950's.

Norfolk Southern train 21Q emerges from the west portal of Allegheny Tunnel at Gallitzin, PA on February 8, 2010. This tunnel was built by the PRR and opened for service in 1854. It was constructed as a single-track bore; in 1993-1995 Conrail widened the tunnel and installed two tracks, and increased the overhead clearance to permit double-stack trains. On the left is the west portal of the abandoned Gallitzin Tunnel at Gallitzin, PA. The PRR constructed this tunnel and it opened for service in 1904. This tunnel was taken out of service by Conrail in 1995 when the adjacent greatly expanded Allegheny Tunnel was reopened.
