June 1985 found former Denver and Rio Grande Western K-37 #497 in service on the Durango & Silverton and is seen crossing Main St. as it leaves Durango. Although the D&RGW did occassionally send the K-37's up the Silverton Branch, they were never regular power up there due to weight and clearance problems and hard on the track.
The Durango & Silverton overhauled #497 and, for a short time, had it working on the branch. Like the Rio Grande, the D&S found it hard on the track and soon traded it to the Cumbres & Toltec for derelict K-36 #482 which they overhauled and returned it to service. #497 did see service on the Cumbres but currently is out of service awaiting an overhaul.
