I am not familiar with the location in question, but a
very useful photographic accessory is a compass. You
don't need a super high quality one so you don't need
to spend much money. A basic compass should be available
from any outdoor store.
I keep a compass attached to each of my photo bags.
Why is it important? Because it lets you get a very good
approximation of where the sun will be at a given time
of the day. Just looking at where the sun is, particularly
at mid-day, often doesn't give you much information. You
still need to compensate a little for the seasons -- after
you take your compas reading.
I've often scouted a photo location during bad/overcast
weather -- and then had a good idea for what time of day to
come back to get the lighting that I am looking for.
Hope that helps a little.
