Strapac's rosters show that the remaining units (which were most of the 18) were finally retired in December 1986. Many had been out of service for some time prior (including some being stored in the large group of units at the Bullring in LA).

When they were new, they were part of the first-line power assigned to the Sunset Freight Pool and could be seen from East St. Louis to San Francisco. As they were bumped by newer units, they became secondary units, often working in local service. Most of the batch retired in 1986 were sold for scrap in Texas.
