This day in Railroad History
March 19, 1864
The C.P. Huntington Steam Locomotive (CP#3) arrived in San Francisco, March 19, 1864, on board the vessel "Mary Robinson." It was built by Danforth, Cooke & Company of Paterson, New Jersey in 1863. The railroad wanted to purchase a larger engine but because of the Civil War, the #3 and its sister engine, the T. D. Judah were the only ones available. The #3 was used in the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
In 1871 it was transferred to the newly organized Southern Pacific Railroad and renumbered No. 1. It became a construction engine, operating between San Jose and Hollister, and then moved to Oakland for many years of operation in the Bay Area. The locomotive finished its career as a weed burner, clearing the track. The C.P. Huntington is significant nationally as the sole surviving standard-gauge 4-2-4 in the U.S. This engine is the oldest locomotive owned by the California State Railroad Museum and is depicted prominently on the Museum's logo.

We had just arrived at LaCrosse,WI on time with Amtrak #7 its July 1978 we're both 12 year seniority guys and we'll be holding a regular passenger assignment for three months. The reason being the Milwaukee had started the Sprint train project and all the old heads went over there.Fireman Ron Morales stands proud next to the POOCH we had just ridden on from Milwaukee to LaCrosse. The heater cars are spotted for boiler water and if you look real hard you can see a Southern Pacific storage mail car behind the consist. Those POOCH's rode like loaded cement trucks on Milwaukee's rough track.
