The victim was a 30 year employee. He was a surfacing gang foreman. It is thought that he might have thought the surfacing machines, tamper and such might have been holding the gates down. The news reports, as usual, have it wrong. Those reports said he was sitting on the crossing, but in fact he drove around the gates not knowing that Metrolink was close.
