This day in Railroad History
April 1, 1991
The East Portland Traction Company officially took over what was left of the Portland Traction Company line between Milwaukie and East Portland, where it connects to the SP/UP/BNSF. The first tracks of the Portland Traction Company were built in the 1890s, but it had many different owners. At one point logging railroads with Shay geared locomotives connected to the PTC. The last electric interurban ran in 1958 and in 1962 the Southern Pacific and the Union Pacific jointly purchased the PTC. Much of the business in later years was at the Milwaukie Industrial Park established by the PTC in the 1950s. Dick Samuels and his family continue to operate the EPTC as the Oregon Pacific Railroad today.

A west bound CSX train of coal empties splits the signals at Weverton, Maryland on the Cumberland Sub three miles west of Brunswick, MD on January 28, 2008. The train is headed back to the West Virginia coal fields to the west for reloading. On the lead is four week old ES44AC No. 731, one of 84 such diesels CSX purchased from General Electric in 2007. This location marks the end of the Metropolitan Sub and the beginning of the Cumberland Sub.
