The CSX has already experimented with the new narrowband frequencies in various places for a few months as "temporary installations" only. The have found out that it is much worse than the current .015 MHz spacing. There is more interference, especially when trop. ducting is taking place even when using digital instead of analog. For 3 months in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina they set up a temporary repeater that repeated the road channel 84. It was on one of the narrowband channels that was adjacent to channel 49, the UP Avondale Intermodal channel. Needless to say, the two interfeared with each other very badly and the quality of the "AG" Dispacher being repeated on the road channel was extremely poor. Many times the crews would have to ask him to repeat what he was saying, as there was so much "garbage noise" in his transmission. I know that BNSF experimented someplace in this same manner and found their results to be the same. I have been told that there will be no immediate channel changes after 1-1-2013, but will happen as new changes and installations occurr after that date. Getting back to what CSX did in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, I could receive the oddball frequency on my scanner, but the further away you got, the more garbled it got, you couldn't understand it. Also, with the UP Intermodal talking on their channel and the repeater going at the same time, it sounded like absoulute trash. Sad to see that FCC is allowing and taking a perfectly good system and ruining it.
