This day in Railroad History
April 8, 1929
The first group of 20 commercial passengers arrived in Waynoka, Oklahoma midway through a rail-air journey to Los Angeles from New York in the first scheduled combined rail-air-rail-air journey of just under 48 hours. At the time, the fastest all rail trip New York to LA was about 100 hours. Passengers rode the Pennsylvania Railroad overnight from NYC to Columbus, Ohio, then flew in a Ford Tri-Motor to Waynoka. They boarded the Santa Fe Railway's "Missionary," at Waynoka's Santa Fe Depot for an overnight run to Clovis, New Mexico. Here they were again tri-motored to Los Angeles, California.
