This day in Railroad History
April 17, 1983
The Denver & Rio Grande conceded to Mother Nature and announced plans to build a new tunnel through Billies Mountain around an enormous landslide that dammed the Spanish Fork River, eventually destroying the D&RG tracks, 2 US highways, and the town at Thistle, Utah. Construction of the new railroad tunnel took 81 days, in the meantime D&RG traffic took an expensive detour on UP tracks. D&RG's coal branch to Marysvale from Thistle was abandoned.

April 18, 1998
Joint Burlington Northern and Union Pacific operation of the Camas Prairie Railroad ended when Camas Prairie RailNet took over operation of the 227 miles of trackage east of Riparia, Washington. The Camas Prairie Railroad Company was a curious mix of wheat field granger and Northwest logger--a railroad serving grain farmers of the rich Camas Prairie as well as the timber barons of the Clearwater River and its tributaries. It lasted intact into the era of railroad deregulation, its traffic base overwhelmingly dependent upon the appetite of the giant timber and paper mill of Potlatch, Inc., at Lewiston Idaho. The CPR was noted for its climb up Lapwai Creek on a three percent grade, crossing some remarkable wooden trestles, climaxed by the near-million board feet of the bridge called Halfmoon: 685 feet long, 141 feet high, laid out on a 14 degree s-curve.
