Major Eldon was stationed at Ft Douglas..and he took his girlfriend (yes even Eldon) to Payson on the SL&U..returning on obs car 75l. At abandonment, even tho the 751 had been broadsided and badly damaged early in its life by a D&RGW Heber steamer at the Provo crossing...it was perhaps for sentimental reasons Eldon chose to pay the agreed $250. for it - rather than obs car 750. ==== Interestingly, the 751 was seen from the CZ in the WP yard in Stockton the afternoon before it was scheduled to be on its first SN excursion from Oakland to Fairfield-Vacaville-Willota.. early the very next a.m. It seemed impossible that it could make it to Oakland and be switched out that night and make it thru the Oakland Terminal Ry interchange to 40th and Shafter.... but when fans arrived..there it was ready to go. ====== Finally, when Eldon heard that the SLG&W gave up electric service.. He wanted to buy one of the 500 series McGuire Cummings combines.. He offered $250. ..Back then.. in 1950 a man with a family could live on $150 a month. Noting this comparison.. when when SLG&W owners unrelentingly insisted on $850. for a car... Eldon felt they were being unreasonable ... so that is why there is no SLG&W 500 series at the Western Ry Museum today.
