This day in Railroad History
April 21, 1868
Eli H. Janney received a patent for the the modern knuckle coupler that replaced link and pin couplers on North American railroads. Automatic couplers also made possible the use of air brakes, which had not been successfully used with link and pin couplers because of excessive slack in the coupling. Janney continually improved the coupler and received 20 additional railroad related patents. Janney was a dry goods clerk and former Confederate Army officer from Alexandria, Virginia, who used his lunch hours to whittle from wood an alternative to the link and pin coupler.

April 22, 1906
Over the past 4 days, the Southern Pacific Railroad, at no charge, has evacuated over 225,000 refugees from the San Francisco earthquake. This was over half the entire population of the City of San Francisco. Between 6 a.m., Wednesday, April 18th, and Sunday night the Southern Pacific ran 129 trains, with over 900 cars to the main line and local and eastern points, carrying refugees from San Francisco at no charge. During the same time 610 suburban trains were run from Oakland pier with 4880 cars, and a total of 739 trains with 5783 cars. During the same period about 50 trains with 500 cars, were run from points between Third and Townsend streets and Ocean View to the south.
