Canyon vs Donner

Recently there have been unit grain trains passing both east and west through Reno. The loads used to run W/B through the Feather River while the empties (E/B) would come over Donner. In the past 2 weeks I have seen at least 3 W/B loads in the Sparks yard. My question is how practical is it run these loaded trains over Donner vs utilizing the canyon--

Although longer in miles the canyon offers less grade and the need for fewer locomotives

while

Donner requires probably twice as much power and has much steeper grades to contend with

Just curious
