The grain train routings on Donner have been frequent for about three months or so. This change occurred along with the movement of a couple of freights over from the Canyon during the early part of the summer. The Canyon is a more gentle grade, but is longer than Donner and is awkward to transition over to the Fresno sub from. I have no idea if this has anything to do with it but if they take the Canyon, they either have to take the sharp left at Binney Jct onto the Valley or run all the way down to Haggin, cross over the main at E. Haggin onto the Martinez sub for about a mile then take the south east leg of the wye at Elvas to get on the Fresno. Running over Donner only requires them to cut out the DPUs, run down the main to Swanson and cross over to get to the #2 main and then take the south west leg of the wye at Elvas. As for why the grain trains seem to all be using the Fresno sub between Sacramento and Stockton maybe explained by the Sac Sub being fairly busy with UP stacks and the BNSF inside gateway trains. The city of Sacramento has also been hearing complaints about the length of time crossings are being blocked thru town on the Sac Sub and relaying these to the UP. The concerned citizens have also been expressing dissatisfaction with train horns through town.
