One of the reason's for running the grain trains over Donner is all the track work that was taking place in the canyon...Piror to the trackwork almost every grain train would be routed over the Sacramento sub into Stockton unless the sub was busy...then they would make a turn at haggin to the Fresno Sub.I've seen any number of rerouted grain trains from Binney Jct. to Roseville then down the fresno Sub. there are many times when Up/BNSF has a host of trains on the Sac. sub. and to keep the line moving UP dispatchers would start the reroute....At least a couple a times a week, the East Bound double stack out of Oakland will go thru Roseville instead of making the turn at Haggin for the East Bound run up the canyon due to a fleet of south bounds by the UP/BNSF...
