This day in Railroad History
April 25, 1980
The French Train à Grande Vitesse took delivery of its first production electric trainset. As originally planned, the TGV would be propelled by gas turbine-electric locomotives. Gas turbines were selected for their small size, good power-to-weight ratio and ability to deliver high power over an extended period. Prototype TGV 001 was the only TGV constructed with this engine: following the oil price shocks of 1973, gas turbines were deemed uneconomic and the project turned to electricity from catenary. The electricity was to be generated by France's new nuclear power stations.

The first Shay geared locomotive was shipped from Lima Machine Works. While Ephraim Shay and others had earlier built several different prototypes, this was the first machine to have all wheels powered by bevel gears on shafts mounted on the outside of the trucks, the shafts being connected to a crankshaft mounted centered on the side and turned by the engine mounted on the edge of the car above. This is the classic arrangement of Shay locomotives engines and gearing that would be used for all Shays built by Lima Machine Works.
