This day in Railroad History
April 30, 1959
The last remaining section of the narrow gauge Carson and Colorado "Slim Princess" Railroad was abandoned. This Southern Pacific subsidiary had run from Mound House, NV on the Virginia and Truckee RR along the Carson River to Keeler, on the Colorado River, hence Carson & Colorado. Hauling talc and carrying its weight in alkali dust, the SP narrow gauge ran out her years in a vast and beautiful land, trapped by geography, economics and time. Trackage as late as 1950 consisted of 56 miles of 35 pound rail, mixed with some 15 miles of 62 pound steel between Keeler and Owenyo. Some sections of original 35 pound rail, rolled in Sheffield, England, were still in the track; while a few rails made in Holland in the 1860's were reportedly in use on some sidings. Harp switchstands and stub switches were in common use until the end of World War II and a few were still in place after that time. The Laws Railroad Museum was established at the site of old Laws depot after abandonment of the railroad.

Editor's Note - I have found that the search engine is not finding JOC or Progressive Railroading on a regular basis, until it starts seeing these sites they will appear at the front of Domestic or International News as I will pull directly from those sites.
