NP's 1888-1889 survey determined Fourth of July Pass would require grades of up to 2.2 percent and curves as tight as 16 degrees. NP's "transcontinental" profile already looked like a deep-toothed saw blade. If they had added two more significant mountain passes to their main line, I think it would have put them at serious disadvantage against GN and MILW. But yeah, it would have been neat to see trains clawing over Lookout and Fourth of July, and skirting the north shore of Lake CdA.
