Trainnews - volume 3 - issue 101 - 05/07/10

Notice - Trainnews is posted at both trainnews.org and altamontpress.com. Checkout Trainnews.com a RR board dedicated to train and railroad news.

Editors Querry -This is issue 101 for 2010, we have had an interesting first part of the year. The internet news arena has changed with subscription services, and less reporters giving hard news stories. However, I have tried to find revelant material for the trainnews feature. Traditionally, I as for comments, input, etc and still welcome your input; however, this year I would also like some feed back on the trainnews.org site as over the last few days folks have had to read the news on that site due to some security issues with my work PC. Any and all comments, suggestions, etc are welcomed. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

This day in Railroad History
May 7, 1968
Southern Pacific Railroad's new Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) computer system came to life as SP Brooklyn Yard in Portland Oregon was first cut in. SP had been an early leader among railroads with computerization. The purpose of TOPS was to take all the paperwork associated with a locomotive or railroad car - its maintenance history, its allocation to division and depot and duty, its status, its location, and much more - and keep it in computer form, constantly updated by terminals at every maintenance facility. One way to offset the development costs of such a system, of course, was to sell it to other railroads, and the Southern Pacific did just that. A fair number of American railroads licensed the system, as did many others around the world, including British Railways. Parts of TOPS are still in use today.

Domestic News

Editor's Note - I have found that the search engine is not finding JOC or Progressive Railroading on a regular basis, until it starts seeing these sites they will appear at the front of Domestic or International News as I will pull directly from those sites.
