In simple terms these units are equipped more than one diesel engine/generator set. Smaller than traditional locomotive diesels, these engines can be operated alone down when less horsepower is needed and can be shut down even in cold weater due to the cooling sytems being equipped with collant rather than treated water on the larger engines. When more power is needed all engines are started and put on line.
