This day in Railroad History
May 10, 1869
The Gold Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah, marked the joining of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads, creating the nation's first transcontinental railroad. The Central Pacific had begun laying track eastward from Sacramento, California in 1863, and the Union Pacific started laying track westward from Omaha, Nebraska, two years later in July, 1865. The construction time was remarkably short, considering there were virtually no roads or other railrods to haul construction materials, explosives were fairly primitive, and excavation was acomplished largely with human and animal power.
