This day in Railroad History
May 21, 1878
The 3 ft guage Colorado Central Railroad ran its first train to Central City, Colorado. Beginning at Golden, it snaked up Clear Creek. At Forks, it split with one line going up North Clear Creek to Black Hawk and Central City; and the other going up South Clear Creek to Idaho Springs, Georgetown and Silver Plume. Financial problems caused the Colorado Central to be leased to the Union Pacific in early 1879, making it a subsidiary. It was then included in the Union Pacific Denver & Gulf in March 1890, which was controlled by the UP. Then after the collapse of the UP in 1893 it went into receivership and was reorganized into the Colorado and Southern in 1899.

No longer used, but still standing, the last revenue trains rumbled across Half Moon Trestle on the second subdivision of the Camas Prairie in 2000. Labeled by many as “the railroad on stilts,” it went from Clearwater River level (Near Lewiston, ID) up to its namesake prairie on a 3% climb. The second sub left the river and first sub at Spalding and ended at Grangeville, ID. The rails are now gone from Grangeville to Cottonwood and another portion has been pulled just south of the other big trestle at Lawyers Canyon. This one being steel. Here are two photos of Half Moon Trestle and one of Lawyers Canyon.
