The Spokane International Railroad ceased to exist on December 31, 1987 and was fully absorbed by Union Pacific. On the same day, the Mount Hood Railway and the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad also ceased to exist.
On December 29, 1987, the Oregon-Washington Railway & Navigation Company, the Des Chutes Railroad, and the Yakima Valley Transportation Company were merged into OSL and ceased to exist.
The Oregon Short Line was merged into UP and ceased to exist on December 30, 1987 - thus absorbing the OWR&N, Des Chutes and Yakima Valley into UP.
Sometime in 1992, Southern Pacific began phasing out the D&RGW and SSW operating names and ran as one unified Southern Pacific, but the two corporations remained intact until 1997.
On October 1, 1995, Chicago & Northwestern was merged into UP and ceased to exist.
January 1, 1997, Missouri Pacific was merged into UP. (There are several notes in the most current annual report related to a mortgage formerly held by the MP and certain asset requirements UP must continue to hold as a condition of the MP mortgage.)
June 30, 1997, Denver & Rio Grande Western was merged into UP.
June 30, 1997, SPCSL (Southern Pacific Chicago-St. Louis) was merged into UP.
September 30, 1997, SSW was merged into UP.
Southern Pacific Rail Corporation remains a subsidiary of Union Pacific Corporation, along with Union Pacific Railroad Company.
So, today C&NW, MP, D&RGW, SSW - along with OWR&N (and OR&N), the original MH, and YVT do not legally exist. So any requirement to use the reporting marks or lose them must be an AAR matter. On the other hand, Portland Traction Company still exists.
