This day in Railroad History
May 26, 1868
Alfred Nobel is granted a US patent for what is now called dynamite. This was the first practical explosive improvement over black power which had been used for centuries, but was not very powerful. Nitrogylcerin was available, but highly unstable and unsuitable for construction use. In a lab accident, Nobel spilled nitrogylcerin onto sawdust and discovered the mess was very stable. Nobel's patent was for nitro mixed with a porous stone, (i.e. diatomeacous earth). From Nobel's patent: " ...far less sensitive than nitro-glycerine to concussion, and contained in its usual packaging, may be smashed to pieces without any danger of an explosion. Unlike gunpowder, it burns up, when set fire to, without exploding. It can therefore, be handled, stored, and transported with less danger than ordinary gunpowder." Dynamite would significantly change the method of future railroad construction.

Northern Pacific runs the first train through Stampede Tunnel in the Washington state Cascade Range. NP trains for the previous 12 months had been running over the pass via switchbacks until Nelson Bennett's crews could complete the tunnel. The NP was the second transcontinental railroad, and its western terminal was Tacoma, WA, and it construction was partly the result of Federal land grant incentives, similar to the first transcontinental line, built by UPRR-CPRR. Financier Henry Villard, with his infamous "Blind Pool" scheme, controlled the NP for several years, but lost control before Stampede was completed, leading to to control by JP Morgan, until James J Hill gained control of NP in 1903.
