MDO, in one of his chronicles explained why he didn't want steam on the railroad. Most rail fans will disagree but his point was the total lack of common sense people had about walking around railroad property, especially hot main lines and nearby sidings. This is aside from the liability issues. He didn't want people being hurt due to the high stupidity factor around steam. This included crowds around grade crossings stepping out to put pennies on the rails just before 4449's pilot crossed the coin. People chasing steam trains, operating a motor vehicle, holding a video cam out through the open moon roof shooting video of the locomotive at ninety degrees from the direction of the road and not looking where they were going or aware of traffic issues ahead of them. Yet in respectful argument. If that's all that true, how come U.P. runs steam? It's because it is their railroad. I guess I'm thankful that they have a steam program and we can still see steam operate at all. Do people in executive positions have to make difficult decisions that are unpopular? Yes. Do we like it? No. Would I like 4449 to run in California? Yes. Will I ever see it? ? ? ? ? ?
