The one railfan who I was touched by his kindness was Guy Dunscomb. I remember discovering is Century of SP Steam book back in high school, and eventually acquired a copy of the book, and after 20 years, got him to sign it. It was at that signing that in talking with Guy, I mentioned my interest in the Modoc Line. A couple of months later, an envelope showed up in the mail containing a note from Guy and an assortment of contact prints taken on his trips to the Modoc in the 1940s. I was blown away, and Guy invited me down to his place to look at photos on the Friday before Winterail years ago.

What a wonderful man. Kinda cool to rub elbows with one of the greats in our hobby.
