I can agree to the comment about groups of older people not welcoming younger ones. My wife and I wanted to join a local dance club, which is populated with people with an average age of 55 to 60. My wife and I are in our mid 30s. They had an open call, which we responded to, but as soon as it was over, they made it very clear we were not wanted back.
I grew up next to a branch line, and I wanted my daughter to have a similar experience. We live in a house next to a main line. I've taken her out on occasion to watch trains with me, and she was recently invited into the cab of a locomotive. I've provided her with many positive train experiences, and I hope they stick.
It would seem that today's younger generation could care less about trains in any way.
