Eugene, Dave and Matt. No rails to trails on the CCT, This line is being held as a transportation corridor for use by CCT and or as a capacity extension for the UP and the BNSF.
On the old SP and WP right of Way there is not enough room in some areas to add track and then there is the NIMBY from the neighbors. Both Sacramento and San Joaquin COGS along with the CalTrans want this corridor left for possible rail service. The cost to rebuild the CCT is much less than adding new track on the UP in the Valley. It could be used as a possible commuter/ Light rail corridor with freight becuse the CCT ROW is 100 wide feet in most places. When a line goes into rail to trails while it is banked for future rail service almost 100% of the time the line never comes back as a rail line.

The CCT and its owner lines have no intention of putting this out of service line into a rails to trails. CCT is alive and well From Lodi to Stockton and at the Port growing new business and adding to its customer base. The entire CCT mainline from Stockton to Lodi was rebuilt in 2005 and 2006 with 131 to 141 lb rail, 36,000 new ties and 63,000 tons of ballast filter fabric and 10 new concrete, and 5 new asphalt road crossings. So to set any rumors aside the CCT is not abandoned and is just out of service Between MP 14 and MP 41 and there will BE NO RAILS TO TRAILS ON THE CCT ROW.
