This day in Railroad History
June 8, 1889
The Broadway line of the Los Angeles Cable Railway Company opened. The line ran on Fort Street (now Broadway) from the Plaza to Seventh and on Seventh to Grand in Los Angeles, California. Its length being about twenty-one miles of single track, worked by three power stations, all similar in design. In connection with this road, and serving as feeders, are twenty-four miles of horse-worked lines. The gauge is 3 ft. 6 in., and the rails, which are of steel, 40 lb. to the yard, are carried on iron sleepers. The channel in which the cable travels is made of cement concrete, and the slot rails on the top are of steel, and weigh 40 lb. per yard. The works on this line are of considerable interest, and include three viaducts, while the curves are numerous. One of the viaducts carries the line over the Santa Fe Railroad and the Los Angeles River, and is of considerable dimensions. The most important viaduct is that over San Fernando Street, and of which several views are here given.

Norfolk Southern's Office Car Special ducks under the former Southern Railway signal bridge at Winston Interlocking, three miles south of Culpeper, Virginia as it heads south on the former Southern Railway main on October 24, 2008. The train is deadheading to Charlotte, NC to position it for an Office Car Special trip to Raleigh on the following weekend. The deadhead move, symboled as NS train No. 955, was powered by all four of Norfolk Southern’s F9s, arranged in classic A-B-B-A formation. The F9s have had most interesting careers: F9A No. 4270 was previously MARC F9PH No. 81, rebuilt from B&O F7 No. 4580 in 1980 by Morrison-Knudsen. The two B units, Nos. 4276 and 4275, are ex CGW/CNW F7Bs, both of which were previously used to power the Chicago & North Western’s Executive Train. No. 4271 was previously MARC F9PH No.85, rebuilt from B&O F7A No. 4557 in 1980 by M-K. All four F-units were purchased by NS from RailCruise America in 2006, and were extensively overhauled at Norfolk Southern’s Juniata Shops in Altoona, PA in 2007. They were until recently previously used on RailCruise America’s dinner train out of St. Louis, which has been discontinued.
