Loco paint

Folks,
Here is a question for the 'rivet counters' out there (which i am not). I was asked this question by a friend, who said that workers must have hired on and will retired before it happens.
When was the last time a major (class I) freight railroad did not have any discontinued paint schemes, predessor company, or 'patched' locomotives running around (special cases like bi-centenial, 'heritage', or Bush units, etc. excepted), and when will it happen again?
In southern California Union Pacific hasn't been 'the same' since 1982, and BNSF has never been. I would guess that Santa Fe wasn't 'the same' since Amtrak, and Southern Pacific was 'the same' only for a few years before the SP/ATSF aborted merger paint scheme. I don't know enough about the railroads out east to make a guess.
Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Thanks,
Steve
