This day in Railroad History
June 21, 1975
The "new" Southern Pacific 4th and King Street San Francisco Station opened, marking the end of the 1914 era 3rd and Townsend station, one block closer to downtown. The 3rd Street Station was built in readiness for the Panama- Pacific Exposition, as a showpiece when terminal stations were built in a grand style, and the Southern Pacific Railroad was a key element of the California economy. SP corporate headquarters were just over one mile away, at 65 Market Street (1 Market Plaza). After Amtrak's formation, the only trains to San Franciso were commuters, and the grand station was no longer wanted.
