Based on my personal observations of the locomotive in 2007, any restoration would be a long, hard, expensive job. It is on display outdoors in a Modesto park, with no protection whatsoever from the elements. It was subject to flooding at least once from the nearby Stanislaus River, and is in horrible shape. Even as a Santa Fe fan I would advocate cutting it up for scrap. It would be a mercy killing.
